My Experience Becoming a Speaker on Global Pre-Youth Conference 2020

Global Pre-Youth Conference is an event created through the collaboration between Precious Island, Elizabeth International, JPPro, and Niskala Studio.

It is about encouraging young people as the next generation to get involved in realizing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) which involves 17 points to create well-being and prosperity in the future sustainably in this national event.

Before this event started, I was auditioned with some other youths to tell our story in this opportunity. It wasn't easy for me to be honest as I have low self-esteem within myself. Then after a long time to do a reflection on myself, I realize I do have a huge interest in gender equality and woman empowerment. Thus I was digging my memories whether or not I have any experience related to the matter to create a link of my story and the actual values to people. Hence, after remembering the past and building up stories, I did the audition and passed!

When I was chosen by Precious Island, I felt honored and nervous. I didn't actually believe I would be chosen. The others were great too! but you know, I let myself believe this is an excellent opportunity to let myself grow. I assure myself that I could do this. The event is held in another city, to be exact at Denpasar. I have to go there all by myself using a motorcycle since my parents were busy and I have no friends to go there with me. I think it was my first time going alone to Denpasar. I was just so ecstatic with the chance they have given to me. Though to be honest I didn't really know what to prepare besides my story.

There, everyone was so professional! We did a full recital the day I arrived at Denpasar. It was very fun to meet a lot of new people. Even some of them were amazed at how the community gives the opportunity to younger people. Not many organizations would do that right.

The day finally came and I was nervous. I was going to talk about a sensitive and heavy topic: gender equality especially about the choices of women. Fortunately, I was accompanied by one senior which is a cool professional lecturer, and the other was a young man who has a great passion for leadership. I was able to calm down and feel comfortable. Then when the event began, the talk was going smoothly (phew) although the questionnaire was a bit harsh and in-depth. Due to my nerve of being watched by more than 100 people, I was nervous, I didn't fully express my thought. It was my first time being a speaker. Given the chance to tell people what I really feel about woman's rights. I still have some thoughts left that I kept on thinking which I probably will share on another thread.

At the end of the event, I was so flustered. I didn't think I give my best as I still have things I would like to say. Though I honestly thought that event give me such a huge chance to improve. I know that some of my friends were kinda sarcastic when they knew I was chosen as they doubted me. But I would give myself a pat on the back for being able to tell and remind others about the importance of gender equality, education, and also equal rights as humans. It was such an amazing opportunity and I am deeply grateful for it as it improved me personally as one of our nation's future generations.
